Skin and Humidity

When the air is less humid in the winter, everyone can see a difference in their skin. It is less pliant, may feel stiff, and requires more moisturizer to keep it looking its best. While feel is one thing, humidity has many others effects on the skin as well.

One of the biggest effects of humidity is the moisture content of the skin. Dry skin is not happy skin but excessively moist skin is not happy either. Depending on the humidity on any day, it is important to moisturize accordingly.

Humidity has a positive effect on skin as well. Because it keeps the skin moist when it is present, the wrinkles that form due to dry skin are less likely to occur. Skin then looks younger longer, as we associate dry skin with age.

A key downside of humidity is that it has a tendency to make people sweat. While not a negative at all times, sweat that doesn’t evaporate because of the humidity sits on the skin and combines with the skin’s oil. This can result in blemishes and other unsightly problems.

Humidity can be both a blessing and a curse, depending on the amount of it that exists. In Houston, it is possible for there to be too much humidity for individuals not prone to dry skin. In this case, blemishes may occur and will need to be cared for.
