What's Your Skin Type?
Like so many things in life, skin care is not “one size fits all.” The types of products and treatments that would most benefit you depend on the kind of skin you have. A person’s skin type can be influenced by his or her genetics, diet, lifestyle, and more. Most dermatologists divide these types into five different categories, although your own skin care provider may have some different ideas.
Discovering what kind of skin you have is not difficult. The easiest trick is to simply dab your face with some rice paper or cosmetic tissue. The results will let you know what kind of skin you have, which is information your Houston dermatologist can use to make helpful recommendations. The five most commonly recognized skin types are:
- Dry. If there is no grease or transparent spots on your tissue, this can be a good sign: at least your skin is not oily. However, there is also such a thing as being too dry. If your skin is prone to flaking, splotches, and wrinkles, you may need moisturizing treatment to keep it healthy.
- Healthy. The ideal skin type will not leave any grease on your test tissue, but also will not be dry enough to splotch or flake. Healthy skin has a soft, supply texture and a youthful complexion. It is the easiest skin to care for, but does need some treatment if you want to maintain it.
- Oily. Transparent spots on rice paper are a sign of overly oily skin. Excess oil can make skin shiny and porous, and is a common contributing factor to blackheads and pimples. Fortunately, there are many products and treatments for combating this problem.
- Combination. Most women have combination skin, which is oily in some parts and dry in others. The oily part is usually found in the T-zone (the eyes, nose, and chin), which patches of dry skin on the upper halves of the cheeks. You may need to combine different products to effectively treat this problem.
- Sensitive. Sensitive skin is characterized by dryness and delicacy. It has small pores, becomes flushed very easily, and can be prone to rashes or irritation. If your skin is very sensitive, you may need the advice of an experienced Houston dermatologist to make the right choice for its care.
