Botox Uses
Everyone knows that Botox is an excellent way of making fine lines and wrinkles much less visible. What many people don’t realize is that the bacteria can also be used to make migraines less painful or non- existent.
Many migraine clinics are now using Botox as a treatment for migraines and other headaches. Some plastic surgeons are also certified to administer Botox as a migraine headache treatment. Using Botox to treat migraines was discovered by accident. During the clinical trials concerning Botox’s cosmetic uses, many participants who were frequent sufferers of migraine headaches reported that they experienced fewer wrinkles and fewer headaches.
The use of Botox for headache treatment is an off-label use. This means that it has not been approved by the FDA to be marketed as headache treatment. While it is an off-label use, it is not the first off-label use of Botox. Botox has been used to treat crossed eyes, twisted necks, hyperhidrosis, and stiff muscles. Hyperhidrosis is the name for a condition which causes a person to sweat in excess of that required for regulation of body temperature.
When using Botox to treat headaches, 10 to 25 shots in the head, neck, and shoulders are administered. Doctors and researchers alike are not sure how Botox curbs headache pain and stiffness. They believe that the Botox blocks sensory nerves that relay pain messages to the brain. In addition, the Botox injections relax muscles, which makes them less susceptible to pain.
