The Risks Associated with Botox
Unlike many other forms of plastic surgery, Botox patients do not encounter many serious risks to their health when undergoing the procedure. There are, however, some potential side effects that anyone considering Botox needs to understand.
Following the procedure, a very small percentage of patients experience a few unwanted reactions in the first few days after their Botox injections were performed. The side effects include a bruised or sore feeling around the injection site, minor hemorrhaging initially, and some minor pain. Two other potential side effects are recurrent headaches or nausea in the first week. While these may sound bad, side effects are thought to affect less than 10% of all people who have been treated with Botox.
Rare Complications
Complications from Botox injections, which are also rare, include drooping or muscle weakness. These are due to the same benefits of Botox that even out wrinkles. The problems vary due to the injection sites. They are most commonly due to the amount of Botox injected being too great. As an example, a dose that is too high and has been injected into the crow’s feet around the eyes may cause the patient to have problems blinking. Fortunately, these side effects should wear off as the benefits wear off.
People at Risk
Some people are at greater risk of complications than others. Individuals with multiple sclerosis, bleeding disorders, or on certain medicines should avoid Botox. It is also considered wise not to receive Botox injections if you are pregnant or nursing.
