The Three Types of Wrinkles
As people age, they begin to notice a variety of creases and folds in their faces that were not there when they were younger. These are wrinkles. There are three types of wrinkles that people experience: dynamic, static, and wrinkle folds.
Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that are caused by the contraction of muscles that are attached to the skin. When the muscle contracts, the contraction of the muscle causes the skin to wrinkle between the muscles. These wrinkles are commonly found between the eyebrows, across the forehead, and on the cheeks near the corners of the eyes. The wrinkles between the eyes are “Crow’s Feet.” The solution to this problem is to relax the muscles. By relaxing the muscles, the skin is allowed to relax as well.
Static wrinkles develop when the skin loses its natural elasticity. Some of this occurs naturally with age, but the effects can be exacerbated by sun damage and exposure, smoking, genetics, poor nutrition, and prolonged dynamic wrinkling. Prolonged dynamic wrinkles are present even when the muscles are not contracted or contracting. This type of wrinkling is typically fixed through chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing.
Wrinkle folds are the final type of wrinkles. This type of wrinkle is indicative of the underlying facial structure sagging. This type of wrinkle most frequently causes the deep grooves between the nose and mouth. To fix this problem, midface lifts, cheek lifts, and neck lifts are frequently employed. The problem can also be fixed by plumping the groove with either collagen injections or fat transfers.
