Birthmarks
Many individuals are born with blemishes of various sizes that are formed before birth. These are called birthmarks. While many people feel they are rare, more than 10% of babies have a vascular birthmark. These birthmarks are part of the group of skin lesions known as “naevi.” The cause of most birthmarks is unknown in most cases. It is known that vascular birthmarks are not actually hereditary.
Birthmarks are soft, raised swellings on the skin. They frequently have a bright red surface and some may even look a bit like a strawberry. These marks are also known as “strawberry naevi” or as “infantial haemangiomas.”
The marks on an individual’s skin typically appear after birth, typically in the first month. These marks can appear anywhere on the skin. While the marks are not a health problem, they can cause problems when they appear on or affect the face. They still do not cause health problems but can make people self conscious.
On the skin, birthmarks are a benign overgrowth of blood vessels in the skin. They are composed of cells that usually form the inner lining of blood vessels. It is believed that they occur as a result of a localized imbalance in factors controlling the development of blood vessels.
Strawberry marks affect as many as one in ten Caucasian babies. These marks are particularly prevalent in premature babies. Strawberry marks are not a sign of ill health or associated with cancer. Some types of birthmarks can be hereditary in that the instance that one woman’s children could all have the exact same birthmarks.
