Chemical Peels – An Overview

There are four major types of chemical peels you can consider at your local Houston med spa or dermatologist’s office: alpha or beta hydroxy acid, jessner’s, trichloroacetic acid, and phenol peels.

Alpha/Beta Hydroxy Peels

Alpha hydroxy acids, and their stronger cousin, beta hydroxy acids, are naturally occurring acidic compounds such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid. These help slough off and exfoliate dead skin cells on the surface, along with decreasing wrinkles and fine lines. These tend to be the most gentle types of peels, however, they can still cause irritation and increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Jessner’s Peels

Jessner’s peels are another popular type of chemical peel, typically containing a mix of both alpha and beta hydroxyl acids, usually salicylic acid and lactic acid. Its defining characteristic is that it contains a chemical called resorcinol, which is often used on its own as a dandruff or eczema remedy.

Trichloroacetic Acid Peels

Trichloroacetic acid peels are much stronger than Jessner’s and alpha/beta hydroxy acid peels. They come in concentrations of 20% all the way up to 50%, although concentrations higher than 35% are typically used with caution as they bring with them a higher risk of scarring. Because of their strength, daily treatment with sunblock afterwards is a necessity.

Phenol Peels

The strongest chemical peels are phenol peels, which penetrate extremely deep and are typically applied while the patient is sedated or under anesthesia due to the intense pain involved. The effects of a phenol peel are so significant that they can be noticed for many years after administration. Due to their strength, they are typically only used after the weaker peels have not achieved the desired effect.
