Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a useful way of smoothing and improving the texture of the skin. They utilize a chemical solution that causes the skin to blister and then peel away. The benefit is that the new layer of skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin was.

There are a variety of chemical peels available. Some can be bought and used without a medical license although this is not advised. Whenever doing something drastic with skin, it’s best to have someone with a license perform the procedure in order to minimize the risks of a mistake.

The chemical peels available come in various strengths. There are mild ones like alpha hydroxyl peels, moderate chemical peels like trichloroacetic acid peels (TCA), and deep chemical peels like phenol.

The mild chemical peels do not generally require any sedation as the patient only experiences the barest amount of pain. If a pain reliever is requested, Tylenol is generally sufficient. Moderate chemical peels are generally the same. Deep chemical peels, due to the amount of pain involved, generally are not performed without at least general anesthesia. In some cases, as in instances where the patient is having other surgical procedures done, the patient will be under heavy sedation for the deep chemical peel.
