Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is designed to go beyond surface muscles and treat the connective tissue of the body. The masseuse seeks to loosen muscles and tension by applying a variety of techniques. It is good for resolving long term problems, relaxation, and prevention of injury.
Although most massage therapists will have some deep tissue experience, it is best to find a masseuse who specializes in the technique. Certain procedures such as “myofascial release” or “rolfing” are specifically designed for deep tissue massages. However, you must find a therapist who has been trained in these practices. It is okay to switch between a few therapists to find the masseur you prefer.
For a standard massage, the therapist only uses his or her hands and lower arms. In a deep tissue massage, the therapist may use his or her elbows and fingers to help work the muscle. Additionally, tools made out of ceramic, glass, and wood may used to massage the muscles. The massage will be slow, incorporating lots of long strokes to ease muscles. Firm pressure may be applied to tense areas for several minutes to help alleviate tightness.
It is important for communication between the client and the therapist to be good. A deep massage may be intense, but it should not be painful. Inform the therapist of any trouble spots where you’d like him or her to focus. After the massage, make sure to hydrate with lots of water.
