Estheticians and Medical Aestheticians
When people visit a medical spa, they do not know who will be performing the procedure they’ve opted to have done. Procedures at medical spas are performed by doctors, nurses, estheticians, and medical aestheticians in an effort to provide the patient with the highest level of care possible.
An esthetician is a specialist who is focused in the study of skin care. This includes:
- Facials
- Microdermabrasion
- Body wraps
- Salt glows
- Waxing
- Cosmetic make-up services
Estheticians may work independently in a spa or a salon or may assist a cosmetic doctor in his or her practice. This is beneficial in expanding the abilities of the doctor’s practice and allows a patient to have everything done at once. In addition, working with a doctor may allow the esthetician to perform advanced services that require a doctor’s supervision.
The word aesthetician has a number of people confused as it has different interpretations for different people. When the word is spelled “esthetician,” it typically represents a person who has chosen to work with skin in a salon or spa setting. The “a” in ‘aesthetician” changes the meaning altogether. An aesthetician, regardless of whether that person is medical, paramedical, clinical, or a camouflage therapist, has chosen to work in the medical field around doctors.
An aesthetician is more likely to work with a cosmetic doctor on advanced procedures. It also implies that the person has received more advanced training than an esthetician would.
