Exfoliation and its Benefits
In cosmetology, exfoliation is the term applied to the processes of removing dead skin cells through physical and chemical means in order to expose the living tissue underneath. Reported benefits of exfoliation include:
- Brighter, fresher-looking skin
- Reduced oil secretion
- Minimization of fine lines
- Better absorption of other skin care products
Common Exfoliation Methods
Exfoliation techniques are frequently divided into two categories, based on how they act to reveal newer layers of skin.
- Physical exfoliation is any method of removing dead epidermal cells that relies on mechanical actions. Typically these processes involve small particles such ground pumice (lava stone), salts, and synthetic beads, often delivered via body gel or similar lotions. They can also include specialized types of cloth and abrasive sponges.
- Chemical exfoliation is based on the effects of certain compounds, usually acidic in nature, that work to dissolve the bonds holding together dead skin. The application of chemical exfoliates is determined by strength and concentration of the active ingredients. Some products, for example, are left on for a whole day, while others should be removed after just a few minutes.
With both physical and chemical exfoliates, it is important to heed product warnings and instructions as precisely as possible to avoid any potential damage to the skin being treated. Overuse of exfoliates can easily lead to redness and dry, irritated skin, and in some cases even bleeding from the pores.
