Laser Hair Removal: How long does it last?

Laser hair removal is done over a series of sessions. The number of sessions required to receive optimum results will vary by individual. However, most people should expect a minimum of three treatments.

During each treatment, all hair is temporarily disabled, but not all of the hair follicles are able to be removed. Generally, people do not require more than six sessions. The main exceptions are individuals with hormone imbalances. These people may require many more sessions than most. Studies reveal that, in 4 to 7 sessions, 80-90% of candidates achieve over 80%t permanent hair reduction.

In between sessions, it is normal for some hair to regrow. Depending on the hair cycle, follicles that were dormant during the previous laser removal session may reach a growth phase. The cyclical nature of hair is one of the main reasons for multiple laser treatment sessions. However, with multiple treatments you can be sure that all hairs are subject to the treatment. It is also okay to shave these unwanted hairs between treatments, so you don’t need to worry about having to keep the hair.

Some patients prefer maintenance sessions once or twice a year to be sure the hair does not appear. In a minority of patients, the hair loss from the treatment is only temporary and complete regrowth occurs. This is most likely in white or blonde haired patients.
