Massage and Hypertension

One in three adults experience high blood pressure levels, and coping with this condition is an ongoing struggle. Doctors will frequently prescribed drugs and medications to control a patient’s blood pressure, but research indicates simpler and less chemically invasive treatments can be extremely effective in combating the effects of hypertension.

While traditional understanding of massage is that the therapy floods tissue with fresh blood and pushes out stagnant blood in tightened areas, increasing pressure within the circulatory system, study after study has indicated that regular massage therapy actually reduces standing heart rates in most subjects.

Supporting Research

If you suffer from high blood pressure, it is always best to consult with your doctor before engaging in regular massage therapy, but consider the following research results:

  • In 1999, a study conducted by The University of Miami School of Medicine evaluated the effects of massage on subjects with controlled hypertension, finding that the individuals undergoing massage therapy showed significant decreases in diastolic and systolic blood pressure in comparison to a control group.
  • A 2005 study by University of South Florida researchers concluded that regular back massage in patients diagnosed with hypertension lowered blood pressure.
  • In 2006, a National University of Health Sciences study sought to establish which types of massage were most effective in reducing blood pressure, and determined Swedish massage to be the most beneficial in this regard.

With regular massage therapy, you may be able to enjoy the benefits of lower blood pressure as well as reduced stress levels.
