Preventing Skin Damage

Let’s take a moment to consider our skin. It protects us, regulates our temperatures, contains sensitive nerves that deliver information about the world to us – and all too often, how do we repay it? By exposing it to harsh conditions like bright sunlight, cigarette smoke, polluted air, chlorine, and other damaging chemicals! Taking just a few moments a day to give your skin the care it deserves won’t just help you feel and look better; it will improve your health and help you avoid pitfalls like skin cancer.

Use a Good Cleanser

Some facial cleansers are too harsh, causing your skin to dry out and even sustain damage. Others are too oily, which can clog pores, leading to even dirtier skin. Don’t be afraid to use a trial and error method until you find a cleanser that works for you, or ask one of the skin care specialists at Houston medical spa Dermagenix for advice.

Use Sunscreen Regularly

It’s not just for days at the beach. During bright summer days, we can expose our skin to damaging amounts of sunlight in the time it takes to run errands. This is especially true for facial skin, which will be exposed almost constantly pretty much regardless of what you wear. Use a sunscreen that’s at least SPF 15 – more if you’re outside for long periods of time – and look for one that blocks UVA and UVB rays.

Use Tanning Booths Sparingly

An occasional trip to the tanning salon for special occasions probably won’t do serious damage. Using tanning booths regularly, however, has its risks. Tanning booths expose you to ultraviolet rays, which can increase your chances of skin cancer if you are exposed to them in large amounts.
