Pumice Stone and Foot Care
Pumice stone is a substance that forms when intensely hot and frothing lava from volcanic activity is suddenly cooled, usually as it makes contact with water. Its abrasive texture has found a number of uses in both industrial settings and personal care, having been employed as a building material since ancient Roman times.
In terms of hygiene, pumice is perhaps best known for its properties as a physical exfoliate. Crushed pumice is often added to various lotions, soaps, and other vehicles in order to gently scrape away dead skin from the body. However, the stone by itself can be utilized quite effectively to remove calluses, corns, and rough patches from the feet, exposing fresh and healthy new skin cells.
After obtaining a raw stone from almost any personal care store, soak your feet in warm water with a little liquid soap (you can skip this step if you plan to use the stone in a shower or bath). Wet the stone, and then lightly rub it against the “problem areas” of your foot in a back-and-forth motion. Dip your feet in some water to clean off the bits of pumice that will naturally cling to your skin and repeat the process three or four times.
Although you will most likely notice an immediate difference, be careful not to over-scrub, as this can cause bleeding and scratches. Also keep in mind that a pumice stone should not be used if you are suffering from open sores or blisters, as an abrasive agent may only aggravate the situation.
