Reducing the Appearance of Scars

Everyone has scars. These scars supposedly tell a story, but many people don’t necessarily want to share those stories with everyone. The majority of scars will improve on their own with time, but some remain lifelong reminders of a surgery, a simple accident, or a painful life event. The good news is that there are a variety of options for reducing the appearance of scars.

A scar is the result of an injury. The body’s repair system sometimes produces too much collagen at the wound site which results in a scar. The majority of scars will become less visible and more pliable with time, but there are some deep scars that will stay visible.

If a scar leaves a pockmark, it does not have to be kept. Fat or collagen injects can raise the scars instantly but these are temporary fixes. Some laser resurfacing options help a lot by smoothing out scars. Microdermabrasion must follow any laser treatments to get the most out of the laser’s benefits.

Dermabrasion is also an effective way of sanding down scars. This works best with new scars that are between four and eight weeks old. The treatment, however, can be painful and recovery can take a while.

There are some over-the-counter methods that seem to help. Mederma gel can help to reduce the appearance of raised scars. It has been shown in manufacturer studies to help reduce the formation of scar tissue. It works best on new scars.
