Removing Freckles

With the social end of summer having passed with Labor Day, many people have noticed a number of unwanted freckles on their faces and bodies as a result of a summer of worshiping the sun. While freckles used to be viewed as pretty much permanent, there are now ways of removing the freckles and restoring the skin’s formerly unblemished state.

Laser resurfacing is the first effective way of getting rid of freckles. This procedure is performed by a dermatologist. The process is not quite as painless as some would hope. As a result, the doctor numbs the area around the freckles with a local anesthetic. The top few layers of skin are then zapped away with a laser. After the procedure is performed, the skin takes a couple weeks to heal. The results that are long-lasting will be varied.

If laser resurfacing seems a little extreme, chemical peels are also a way to remove freckles. These are also available from a dermatologist. They are an intense exfoliation of the face that uses harsh chemicals to peel away several layers of skin. A chemical peel will reduce the appearance and visibility of freckles, and the skin should heal after a day or two. Sensitive skin will take longer to heal.

Liquid nitrogen, also called cryotherapy, is a third option for freckle removal. This is also known as “freezing” and is a common treatment for warts. When applied directly to a freckle, the liquid nitrogen forms a blister that lifts the freckle out of the skin and causes it to fall away. This can be a painful procedure and should not be used on the same area of skin more than once a week.
