Saunas

Deriving from Finland, the historical home of this unique therapeutic pastime, the word sauna can refer either to a dry or wet steam bath and to the facility built for these baths. Saunas have existed in one form or another for hundreds of years, and enjoy a prominent place in the social and hygienic routines of many cultures.

Potential Benefits

While Scandinavia is considered the birthplace of the sauna, recent decades have seen an increase in popularity across the globe, including in the U.S. Millions of sauna enthusiasts proclaim a number of benefits from regular use, some backed by scientific findings. These include:

  • Increased metabolism and rate of pulse
  • Greater ease of circulation, benefiting extremities
  • Heightened sensations
  • Feeling of deep relaxation
  • Overall physical rejuvenation
  • Expulsion of bodily toxins
  • Relief of minor ailments, such as pain in muscles and joints as well as colds

In some areas, saunas are weekly and or even daily rituals, and often involve alternating periods of extreme heat with an invigorating dip in an icy bath or plunge into a snow bank. Although this part of the sauna routine may not have caught on with many in the U.S., many athletes and fitness fans enjoy the effects of a steam bath on reviving exhausted muscles and energy levels.

Always use caution when you plan to enter a sauna or steam room. Never drink alcohol beforehand, as this will not only negate the benefits of the sauna, but also put you at risk for losing consciousness, a potentially deadly complication. Anyone with chronic heart or respiratory problems should avoid sauna use unless given permission by his or her doctor.
