Thai Yoga Massages

Anyone who has ever experienced a Thai yoga massage knows how close to nirvana it can feel. Born out of the Ayurveda and Yoga practices of ancient India, this form of physical therapy combines deep-tissue relaxation and aided stretching.

The basics of Thai massage are fairly straightforward, with no oils or equipment required. In fact, most Thai yoga massages are performed on a floor or other hard, flat surface instead of the specialized beds we typically associate with professionally-administered massages.

One of the other major distinguishers of the Thai technique is its heightened intensity and the sheer amount of active energy involved. Therapists use their hands, legs, feet, and even their knees to move the receiver in a series of Yogic positions, often quite vigorously.

A typical Thai massage can last anywhere between one and two hours, although shorter sessions can often be administered by a friend if he or she takes the proper precautions.

Benefits of Thai Massages

There is a reason that Thai massages have enjoyed a favorable opinion for thousands of years. Some of the purported benefits of this approach include:

  • Relaxation and stress reduction
  • Improving range of motion
  • Promoting circulation
  • Increasing flexibility
  • Centering and calming the body and mind
