The Formation of Scars

The appearance of skin and the illusion of youth are often dependent on the number of blemishes visible to the naked eye. It is important to protect the skin from external forces that may cause damage, but for many people, it is also important to retain the aesthetic appeal of young and fresh looking skin. One type of skin problem that is common among people of all ages is the development of scars. By understanding how scars form, an individual may be able to minimize their appearance and choose a scar treatment that works for their skin.

Information on Scar Formation

Scars are generally the skin’s reaction to an injury. They are small discolorations or bulges in the skin that occur as the epidermis attempts to heal itself, and although it is effective at sealing the wound, it may be aesthetically displeasing. In the weeks immediately following an injury, the scar tissue that forms is not as strong as the rest of the skin. Any strain on the injury site may result in a widening of the scar and an extended recovery time. Repeated strain and other factors can cause the scar to become discolored, textured, and large.
