The Negative Effects of the Sun on the Skin

One of the worst things you can do to your skin is to not protect it from the sun. Frequent, unprotected sun exposure can result in a number of undesirable results ranging from the premature aging of the skin to skin cancer.

The sun gives off three forms of ultraviolet radiation. Of these three, UVB radiation affects the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, and UVA radiation is now thought to be the major contributor to skin damage. These rays penetrate deep into the skin. To find out more about the harmful effects of the sun on the skin and what you can do to protect it, contact Dermagenix medical spa at 713-662-DERM(3376).

Results of Sun Exposure

Sun exposure can cause the following things to happen in the skin:

  • Collagen breakdown–the constant break down of collagen can result in solar scars as well as wrinkles and a loss of elasticity in the skin.
  • The creation of free radicals–free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that have only one electron instead of two. Free radicals can damage cell function and alter genetic material, possibly contributing to skin cancer.
  • Texture changes–UV exposure causes thickening and thinning of the skin.

The best way to protect your skin from the sun is by avoiding prolonged or frequent exposure, but covering up with clothing and applying quality sunscreen can help lessen damage.
