Tretinoin Creams
Tretinoin creams are a prescription medication used for reducing the effects of aging on the skin. Tretinoin is structurally similar to Vitamin A, and is often prescribed by dermatologists to reduce wrinkles, sagging of the skin, and the appearance of veins, especially on the face. Tretinoin is extremely structurally similar to isotretinoin, also known as Accutane, and possesses many of the same anti-acne properties.
Tretinoin works in the body by activating certain receptors in the skin cells in order to halt or reverse a number of bodily processes. Tretinoin can increase the production of beneficial skin molecules such as collagen and elastin, along with decreasing the skin’s production of oil, which can help contribute to decreasing acne and oily skin in general. It can be effective even in small doses; strengths as low as 0.025% have shown to be effective at causing these anti-aging effects.
It is important to note that there are certain side effects to using Tretinoin creams. One of the main side effects is that it can increase the skin’s photosensitivity (its sensitivity to the sun’s harmful rays). Additionally, it can irritate the skin if used in high doses or for too long; this cell damage can actually accelerate the aged look of one’s skin. Thus, the lowest effective dose should be used whenever prescribed.
Tretinoin cream can be found in numerous brand names such as Retin-A or Renova, or can be specially created at a compounding pharmacy. Tretinoin must be prescribed by a doctor or nurse, but it can also be administered directly at a medical spa by a licensed professional.
