Wart Removal
A wart is a tiny tumor, often caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They are unsightly and can impede normal functioning of a person. There are a number of over-the-counter and home remedies available; however, wart removal by a professional is the most effective method. There are three main types of wart removal treatments:
- Home remedy
- Over-the-counter
- Medical professional
Of the home remedies available, duct tape occlusion therapy is the most effective. DTOT involves covering a wart with a piece of duct tape for weeks or months at a time. Other methods involve applying various common household items to the wart. These range from banana peels to vinegar. Tea tree oil, milkweed, dandelion oil, and other natural extracts are also used. Cutting or burning warts away is dangerous and should not be used.
Any grocery or drug store will offer a variety of over-the-counter removal treatment options. Most of these products utilize salicylic acid in either a medicated pads or a concentrated liquid. Home cryosurgery kits for freezing away warts are also available. They generally use liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Silver nitrate pencils can also be used for wart removal. These products are generally safe when used correctly. They are somewhat effective, but still less effective than wart removal treatment provided by a dermatologist.
Having a wart removed by a qualified dermatologist is the most effective method of removing stubborn warts. Dermatologists may use liquid nitrogen to perform cryosurgery, blistering agents, or salicylic acid. It is also possible to apply a variety of topical or injected chemicals to stimulate the immune system. Burning the wart with a laser is also possible. The majority of warts require multiple treatments to ensure permanent removal, regardless of the method used.
