Warts
A wart is generally a small, rough tumor. These tumors are also known as verruca and are most frequently found on a person’s hands or feet. Warts are also possible in other locations. While they are small tumors, they can resemble a cauliflower or a solid blister.
Warts are very common and are caused by a viral infection. The most common cause is the human pappillomavirus, or HPV. There are more than 100 types of HPV. Warts are contagious because they are viral. It is also possible for a person to get warts from using a towel or other object that has come in contact with a wart. Warts typically disappear after a few months on their own but they can also last for years and can return unexpectedly.
While they are most common on hands and feet, warts can grow on all parts of the body. They can be found on the skin, on the inside of the mouth, on a person’s genitals, and on the rectal area. Most commonly caused by HPV, the location of a wart frequently depends on what type of HPV a person has.
Some types of HPV cause warts on the skin (hands, fingers, feet) while other HPV types cause warts in less easily seen areas. Some people are naturally resistant to HPV viruses and so don’t get warts as easily as some other people might.
