What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite is the dreaded cottage-cheese like dimples that desperately try to mar the landscape of your buttocks, thighs or stomach. Medically speaking, cellulite is the term used to describe the small deposits of fats trapped in pockets of connective tissue just under the skin. But however you choose to describe it, cellulite is universally a nuisance.

There are more over the counter products and home remedies than can be listed available for cellulite reduction. There are also a number of medical procedures available through a dermatologist’s office, such as laser cellulite removal and mesotherapy. But what causes those bumps of shame and is there anyway to avoid their presence in the first place?

Understanding Cellulite Causes

There a number of causes of cellulite including:

  • Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy and menopause
  • The overproduction of estrogen or disturbances in endocrine functions
  • Sedentary lifestyles void of exercise
  • Unhealthy diets high in saturated fats
  • Poor blood circulation and poor lymphatic flow

How to Avoid Cellulite

Cellulite usually cannot be avoided completely. It affects more than 80% of women and many males as well. But the best way to reduce your chances of serious cellulite buildup is to avoid an unhealthy lifestyle. Since most cellulite is the result of fat deposits, a diet made up of whole grains and lean proteins which is void of saturated fats can help keep cellulite at bay. Frequent exercise also helps. Exercise can greatly reduce the amount of cellulite on the body through its fat burning and blood circulation benefits.
